The salmon nigiri, even at deal prices, was sliced thick and draped over properly seasoned rice with the care of a kitchen that refuses to let a promotion dilute quality. The premium ramen, a relatively newer addition to the menu, arrived with a rich pork-bone broth and tender chashu that competed respectably with the dedicated ramen shops in town. But it is the Friday happy hour that earns Yamado its most devoted following: half-price chef's special rolls from 4:30 to 7, cash only, a policy that keeps the regulars honest and the kitchen focused. The Dragon Roll, topped with torched eel and avocado, was our table's consensus pick. Yamado has been a Naperville sushi staple for years, and the combination of quality, value, and consistency explains why it has outlasted trendier competitors.
