Inside Naperville Fresh Market on 75th Street, past the aisles of Eastern European groceries, a small kitchen counter is turning out some of the most unique food in the western suburbs. The chebureki, half-moon fried pastries stuffed with seasoned lamb and onion, arrived crackling hot and shatteringly crisp, the filling juicy and fragrant with cumin. The Kyrgyz noodles, thick hand-pulled strands topped with a beef and onion sauce spiced with black pepper and cumin, were hearty and deeply comforting, the kind of dish that warms you from the inside on a cold Illinois afternoon. Jibek Jolu, named for the Kyrgyz word for Silk Road, operates as a takeout-only counter, and the prices reflect the humble setting: most items land between three and ten dollars. The samsa, flaky baked pastries with lamb filling, rivaled what we had at Shahirizada down the road. This is Naperville's most improbable culinary gem.
