Gemato's Wood Pit BBQ

Local team review
The rib tips are the insider order, and once you try them, the secret is out. Smoky, meaty, and priced so fairly that you wonder how they stay in business — they're the best value on the menu. The cornbread arrived warm with honey butter, sweet and moist in a way that tasted homemade because it is. What I appreciate most about this place is the absence of pretension: no craft cocktail pairings, no architectural plating, just hickory smoke and three decades of knowing exactly what they're doing.
About the Restaurant
Gemato's has been filling Ogden Avenue with the smell of hickory smoke since 1996, and brothers Mario and Tom Soto still run the operation with the same hands-on intensity that built it. The ribs are the headliner, meaty St. Louis-cut racks with a bark that crackles and meat that pulls clean from the bone. The brisket has the smoke ring purists look for, and the pulled pork is dressed with a tangy vinegar-based sauce that cuts through the richness. It's not fancy BBQ; it's proper BBQ, and the regulars who've been coming for three decades wouldn't change a thing.
Insider Tip
The rib tips are the value play, less expensive than full racks, just as flavorful, and they sell out by early evening on weekends.
